POLO and Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro have created a photochromic ophthalmic lens that bleaches more quickly than any other lens. It was a 246 m€ project co-funded with European funds.
The project ran from August 2013 to June 2015 and is currently waiting for the national and European patent.
The research objective was to create a prototype of a photochromic ophthalmic lens that would return to the uncoloured state as fast as possible.
Two prototypes were created, they change color to brown and grey under radiation and return to the uncoloured state in just 2 minutes. The lenses in the market tend to take several minutes to complete the bleaching process, typically more than eight minutes.
These new lenses allow a better adaptability to light intensity increasing the user comfort.
